Blog Vs Wiki
There are many ways blogs and wikipedia are different and similar. One way we can differentiate between them is that Wikipedia consists more of facts than opinions. Where as blogs can have both opinions and facts. In blogs, one can write about almost anything, but in Wikipedia, usually a computer or a person manually edits whatever you write in a wikipedia post, to make sure all the content is correct and factual. A blog can be more personal. You can write any opinions you want, or even just write about your daily personal life. Blogs are more flexible while wikipedia is more of a non fiction blog.
One way blogs were used for collaboration is Tumblr and Yahoo, (Yahoo Acquires Tumblr). Although Yahoo has bought Tumblr (blog), they have not changed anything about how it runs. Yahoo bought Tumblr to collaborate with them by utilizing features that both Tumblr and Yahoo has. Yahoo has contributed "personalization technology and search infrastructure" to Tumblr. This allows Tumblr users to be able to search for relevant posts and blogs easily, and also be recommended relevant posts and blogs. "On the other hand, Tumblr brings 50 million blog posts, 300 million monthly unique visitors and 120,000 daily sign ups". Tumblr contributes their huge user base to Yahoo, which can benefit them with user data; which can help Yahoo receive more data on users and their interests.
A new use for Wikipedia that has not been done is Wikipedia collaborating with Walmart. Walmart started a blog "to highlight the good deeds and productive careers of Wal-Mart employees". This gave me the idea of creating a Wikipedia product database for Walmart. Although, people do just use Walmarts website to view most of their products, Wikipedia can be also used to go in depth about each product's ingredients or facts about the products and uses. Wikipedia could also be used for Walmart by being able to compare multiple products and create the pros and cons of the selected compared products. This can also be used for technology. For example, if someone wants to buy a new laptop but can't decide on either a new Apple Mac book or a Asus laptop. With wikipedia working with Walmart, it can show the posts about Apple mac book and Asus laptop, and compare its technology and prices etc. This can easily help Walmart's consumers in helping them decide what products are best for them. This also helps Wikipedia by expanding their user data base and posts/blogs.
