Blog: Next New

One type of New Media that does not currently exist is a virtual reality group chat within a a social media website, or a new website itself. This new media can be incorporated into social media websites like Facebook or Snapchat or Instagram. This would be really cool and interactive new media because virtual reality is the next biggest thing/ new technology that's being released for games, but being able to use it to virtually see another person on your social media would be the next new thing for social media. This virtual reality could be developed its own website where people can put on tech gear on their body and be able to virtually stand in front of someone else whose wearing the same tech gear. This would definitely revolutionize how people around the world interact with each other online.

Blog: Wiki So Far

So far I have updated the YouTube page on our class wiki. I have added some information on who founded Youtube, and how popular it is today. I also edited the genres section of Youtube, and write many more examples of different types of videos. I also added a famous YouTuber on the page, and write a small bio on him and his accomplishments on YouTube. I will continue to work on this page by adding a couple of more famous YouTubers, to show the diversity on YouTube and how many famous YouTubers can come from around the world.

Blog: P2P

File sharing is when people upload files online to share to others by making the files available to download to the public. P2P is very similar where people share files with other people online. but An example of a P2P file sharing website is PirateBay, where it allows people to download torrents of any files that is uploaded onto the website. Some other examples are Digg, Slashbot, and BoingBoing. The benefit of these P2P file sharing websites is that it can increase the audience and exposure of any files, like for example films. Some films do not get the attention or amount of views they deserve because people are not willing to pay to watch it, but with P2P file sharing websites, it allows people to get these content for free. Although some people would argue that its unfair for the makers of the original content, because they lose money. Blog: Privacy

There are many issues of privacy and confidentiality with it comes to new medias. For example, if someone always posts videos of themselves online on Youtube, they would not want to publicly announce their home address or any personal information. All the information in the videos they post up are not private anymore, so they should be careful of what information they put online. Any information put up online can stay there forever, for anyone to access. This also goes for blogs too. You can find a lot of information about someone on the internet. New media's allow people to connect with the world by posting up their information online and interacting with one another. With this type of freedom that new medias bring along, it also brings out danger. There could be people who can stalk someones information by just searching up their blogs or videos.

Blog: Advice

I would use new media at Baruch college to enhance their events, and professional events. Sometimes students cannot physically attend events or professional events. With new media, we could use Youtube live streaming or Twitch live streaming to allow students to be able to attend these events without physically being there. Another new media that can be used for Baruch's benefit is a blog or Facebook blog where it allows students to submit any problems with college life or even give good ideas that can improve college life at Baruch. They should have a Facebook page of Baruch students, who can help each other out by answering or posting their questions online. These new medias can improve Baruch's community. It can allow people to connect to each other further.

HW Creativity

New media websites and applications allow people to post up creative content they create, and share them. Youtube is a great example of a new media that fosters creativity. An example of creativity that was posted on youtube were videos of disney characters, edited to look like they were rapping popular rap songs (Disney). Although, there may be copyrighted issues when making these videos, Nickelodeon actually supports people using their copyrighted content in making their own creative videos. Youtube has millions of users all over the world, where it allows them to post up any type of video as long as its appropriate. This allows people to post up their own creative content, and share it among the world. Creative videos that are posted on youtube can go viral, amounting to massive amount of views around the world. Youtube allows people to make any video they like, whether its educational, or gaming, or just comedy; which gives them a lot of freedom for their creative imaginations to g...

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used for interaction among children, (After). In the article After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get A Reboot , a virtual world created that children can use is a game called Minecraft. This allows children to be able to exercise their creativity and "imagination" without being monitored by parents all the time, (After). Virtual worlds can allow people to interact and connect with each other in way that is different than physical interaction. Another pro about virtual worlds, is that soon enough they will be able to be accessed through just web browsers, and even on mobile devices. There are also many cons of virtual worlds. "Virtual worlds may impact real-world behavior" (Virtual). If in a virtual world game, a player plays the villain, it could impact them in real life, by making them more likely to "punish strangers" (Virtual). Virtual reality can affect peoples' decisions in real life. Also in virtual games like Grand Thef...

Blog about Twitter

A Twitter discussion can be very similar and different from Blackboard discussion. Blackboard discussions limits us to a group of people that are connected to each other, while Twitter allows people to follow and connect with other people around the world. On Twitter, when a user tweets, there is usually a character limit, where they cannot tweet a huge paragraph, but on Blackboard, you can write a paragraph or so, but under the title of a post. Also on blackboard there are threads of topics, where you can easily be organized with your posts, and find what specific posts you would like to read. Also, you can comment on everyones posts, and its easy to see who wrote what.

Blog: Social Networking Sites

The 4 social networking websites I will compare are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (Website version), and Tumblr. These 4 social networking website are very different from each other. Tumblr is a blog where users can post text, videos, pictures, and also reblog other people's post to share the content. Comparing that to the Instagram website, Instagram allows people to post only pictures and videos, and only allows them to like the posts, or comment, or even share it privately to other people. Tumblr and Instagram can be very similar because they both allow users to have their own profiles that consists of posts they created, but Tumblr allows users to show other people's posts on their own profiles. Facebook and Twitter also have many similarities but also differences. Facebook and Twitter allows users to post a status for everyone in their new's feed to look at. The difference is that Twitter has a character limit on their tweet posts, while on Facebook, you can write as mu...

Blog Social Networking

There are many ways social networking technologies are used in society today. One new way that its been used is "Professional recruiters have started hunting for job candidates using social networking technology — like the kind found on the popular sites MySpace and Facebook" (Social). Social networking can help people who are job hunting, find a job, and for company recruiters to hire more employees for their company. Social networking technologies could help company recruiters find specific targeted potential hires. For example, if a company is looking for someone with this specific skill or degree in lets just say, NYC. They can search for that through Facebook, and more specifically, LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a social networking technology where people create their own profile of their skills and resume. With this, recruiters can search through LinkedIn to find exactly what potential hires they would want for their company. Social networking technologies allow many people to ...

Blog Vs Wiki

There are many ways blogs and wikipedia are different and similar. One way we can differentiate between them is that Wikipedia consists more of facts than opinions. Where as blogs can have both opinions and facts. In blogs, one can write about almost anything, but in Wikipedia, usually a computer or a person manually edits whatever you write in a wikipedia post, to make sure all the content is correct and factual. A blog can be more personal. You can write any opinions you want, or even just write about your daily personal life. Blogs are more flexible while wikipedia is more of a non fiction blog. One way blogs were used for collaboration is Tumblr and Yahoo, (Yahoo Acquires Tumblr). Although Yahoo has bought Tumblr (blog), they have not changed anything about how it runs. Yahoo bought Tumblr to collaborate with them by utilizing features that both Tumblr and Yahoo has. Yahoo has contributed "personalization technology and search infrastructure" to Tumblr. This allows Tumblr...
